Human rights refers to "the basic rights
and freedoms to which all humans are
entitled, often held to include the right
to life and liberty, freedom of thought
and expression, and equality before the
law.

The United Nations Universal Declaration
of Human Rights states:
All human beings are born free and equal
in dignity and rights. They are endowed
with reason and conscience and should
act towards one another in a spirit of
brotherhood.

Human Rights are universal legal
guarantees protecting individuals
and groups against actions which
interfere with fundamental
freedoms and human dignity.


Some of the most important
characteristics of human
rights are that they are:

guaranteed by international standards;

legally protected;

focus on the dignity of the human being;

oblige states and state actors;

cannot be waived or taken away;

interdependent, interrelated;

universal.
