ZERO
WASTE
AGRICULTURE
ZWA
Zero waste agriculture is a type of sustainable
agriculture which optimizes use of the five
natural kingdoms, i.e. plants, animals, bacteria,
fungi and algae, to produce biodiverse-food,
energy and nutrients in a synergistic integrated
cycle of profit making processes where the waste
of each process becomes the feedstock for another
process.
The biogas digester is the heart of most zero
waste agriculture (ZWA) systems. The anaerobic
digestion process is a 3000 year old technology
with over 15 million operating units worldwide.
Zero waste agriculture combines mature ecological
farming practices that delivers an integrated
balance of:
job creation,
poverty relief,
food security,
energy security,
water conservation,
climate change relief,
land security & stewardship.
Zero waste agriculture is optimally practiced on
small 1-5 ha sized family owned and managed farms
and it complements traditional farming & animal
husbandry as practiced in in most third world
communities.
Zero Waste Agriculture also preserves local
indigenous systems and existing agrarian
cultural values and practices.
Zero waste agriculture presents a balance
of economically, socially and ecologically
benefits as it:
1. optimizes food production in an
ecological sound manner.
2. reduces water consumption through and
recycling and reduced evaporation.
3. provides energy security through the
harvesting of biomethane (biogas) and
the extraction of biodiesel from
micro-algae all of which from as a
by-products of food production.
4. provides climate change relief through
the substantial reduction in greenhouse
gas emissions from both traditional
agriculture practices and fossil fuel
usage.
5. reduces the use of pesticides through
biodiverse farming.

Waste Management System (IF&WMS), farm.
In natural systems, "waste" is a nearly unknown concept.
What may be waste products for one species is nearly
always food for another.
The interconnection between the various organisms in
an ecosystem means that, absent external disruption,
environmental cycles can continue more-or-less
indefinitely.
That's not the case with most agricultural or
industrial methods, however; much of what we
do makes waste, and waste is a sign of
inefficiency.
The integrated biomass system will not
be limited to agricultural production.
The integrated biomass system will enable
the development of a variety of value
added products and services including
electricity for export.
1. Fertilizer
2. Crops
3. Carbon sequestration services
4. Ecotourism
5. Restaurant/bakery
6. Agricultural products such
as mango salsa and vinegar,
palm oil etc
7. Education and training
8. Business development services

SUSTAINABLE
AGRICULTURE
Sustainable agriculture
integrates three main
goals:
environmental health,
economic profitability,
social and economic equity.
These goals have been defined by a variety of
philosophies, policies and practices, from the
vision of farmers and consumers.

Xeriscaping and xerogardening refers to landscaping
and gardening in ways that reduce or eliminate the
need for supplemental irrigation. It is promoted in
areas that do not have easily accessible supplies
of fresh water, and is gaining acceptance in other
areas as climate patterns shift.
Plants whose natural requirements are appropriate
to the local climate are emphasized, and care is
taken to avoid losing water to evaporation and
run-off.

SEVEN
FUNDAMENTAL
PRINCIPLES
OF
XERISCAPE
These Seven Fundamental
Principles of Xeriscape are:
Plan and Design...
for water conservation and
beauty from the start.
Create Practical Turf Areas...
of manageable sizes,
shapes, and appropriate
grasses.
Select Low Water Plants...
and group plants of similar
water needs together.
Then experiment to determine
how much and how often to
water the plants.
Use Soil Amendments...
like compost or manure as
needed by the site and the
type of plants used.
Use Mulches...
such as woodchips, to
reduce evaporation &
to keep the soil cool.
Irrigate Efficiently...
with properly designed systems
(including hose-end equipment)
and by applying the right amount
of water at the right time.
Maintain the Landscape Properly...
by mowing, weeding, pruning and
fertilizing properly.
