SECTION 1

SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability is the capacity to endure. In
ecology, the word describes how biological
systems remain diverse and productive over time.
Long-lived and healthy wetlands and forests are
examples of sustainable biological systems. For
humans, sustainability is the potential for
long-term maintenance of well being, which has
environmental, economic, and social dimensions.

Healthy ecosystems and environments provide vital
goods and services to humans and other organisms.

There are two major ways of reducing negative
human impact and enhancing ecosystem services.

The first is environmental management; this
approach is based largely on information gained
from earth science, environmental science, and
conservation biology.

The second approach is management of human
consumption of resources, which is based
largely on information gained from economics.

SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability is “development that meets the
needs of the present without compromising the
ability of future generations to meet their
own needs.” A practice cannot be said to be
'sustainable for X years/generations.' The use
of any span of time disqualifies the activity.
Sustainability is for perpetuity.

Sustainability also means greater efficiency in
resource use, ultimately giving benefits to
economic growth and overcoming poverty, as well
as health and quality of life.

MICRO
SUSTAINABILITY
MICO-SUSTAINABILITY

Micro-sustainability focuses on the small
environmental actions that when calculated
collectively result in a large environmental
impact.

Micro-sustainability centers on individual
efforts, behavior modification and creating
attitudinal changes, which result in an
environmentally conscious individual or
community.

Micro-sustainability encourages sustainable
changes through change agents, which are
individuals that are encouraged; and therefore,
foster positive environmental action inside
their own sphere of influence.

Examples of
micro-sustainability
include;

recycling,

turning off lights
when not in use,

programming thermostats
for efficient use of
energy,

reducing water usage
through conservation,

changing driving habits
or patterns in order to
use less gasoline,

modifying buying habits
or behaviors in order to
reduce waste and
consumption.

Advocates talk about taking on the small
stuff involving individual, rather than
organizational practices. These narrow,
small ticket, community level actions
have immediate local benefits.

If widely imitated, they will have a
cumulative, broader impact.

SUSTAINABILITY
DEVELOPMENT

Sustainable development (SD) is a pattern
of resource use that aims to meet human
needs while preserving the environment so
that these needs can be met not only in
the present, but also for generations to
come.

Sustainable development as development that
"meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs."

Sustainable development ties together concern
for the carrying capacity of natural systems
with the social challenges facing humanity.
As early as the 1970s "sustainability" was
employed to describe an economy "in
equilibrium with basic ecological support
systems." Ecologists have pointed to The
Limits to Growth, and presented the
alternative of a "steady state economy"
in order to address environmental concerns.
