SEXISM
Sexism, prejudice or discrimination based on sex or gender, especially
against women and girls. Although its origin is unclear, the term sexism
emerged from the “second-wave” feminism of the 1960s through the ’80s and
was most likely modeled on the civil rights movement’s term racism
(prejudice or discrimination based on race). Sexism can be a belief that
one sex is superior to or more valuable than another sex. It imposes
limits on what men and boys can and should do and what women and girls can
and should do. The concept of sexism was originally formulated to raise
consciousness about the oppression of girls and women, although by the
early 21st century it had sometimes been expanded to include the oppression
of any sex, including men and boys, intersexual people, and transgender
people.

SEXISM?
Sexism is a form of discrimination based on gender. While many people
use the term specifically to describe discrimination against women,
it can also affect men, intersexuals, and transsexuals, along with
individuals who eschew traditional gender roles and identities, such
as people who identify as genderqueer. Like other “-isms,” sexism has
far-reaching effects in society, and the study of it is a complex field.
In addition to outright discrimination, sexism includes attitudes that
support discrimination, such as stereotyping sex roles and generalizing
an entire gender. It can be rooted in cultural traditions, fear, hatred,
or superiority, with many sexists believing that their gender is superior
for a variety of reasons. While many nations have laws which are designed
to thwart sexism in places like the workplace, it often infiltrates society
so thoroughly that these attitudes cannot be easily shaken off.

experienced on a day to day basis. They might be serious or minor,
outrageously offensive or so niggling and normalised that you don’t
even feel able to protest. Say as much or as little as you like, use
your real name or a pseudonym – it’s up to you. By sharing your story
you’re showing the world that sexism does exist, it is faced by women
everyday and it is a valid problem to discuss.
