SECTION 1
RURAL
AREA
Rural areas or the country or countryside are
areas that are not urbanized, though when large
areas are described country towns and smaller
cities will be included. They have a low
population density, and typically much of the
land is devoted to agriculture. The degree to
which areas of wilderness are included in the
term varies; very large wilderness areas are
not likely to be described by the term in most
contexts.
In parts of the developed world urban sprawl
has greatly reduced the areas that can be
called rural, and land use planning measures
are used to protect the character of rural
areas in various ways.

SECTION 2
RURAL
SCHOOLS
National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)
revised its definition of rural schools.
The new classification
system has four major
local categories,
city,
suburban,
town,
rural
each of which is subdivided into three subcategories.
Cities and suburbs are subdivided into the categories
small, midsize, or large; towns and rural areas are
subdivided by their proximity to an urbanized area
into the categories fringe, distant, or remote.

SECTION 3
RURAL
HEALTH
In medicine, rural health is the
interdisciplinary study of health
and health care delivery in the
context of a rural environment
or location.
Some of the fields
of study comprising
rural health include:
health,
geography,
midwifery
(remote locations
often do not have
an OB/GYN),
nursing,
sociology,
economics,
telehealth/telemedicine
Residents of metropolitan counties are
generally thought to have easy access
to the relatively concentrated health
services of the county’s central areas.
However, some metropolitan counties are
so large that they contain small towns
and rural, sparsely populated areas that
are isolated from these central clusters
and their corresponding health services
by physical barriers.

ISSUES
IN
RURAL
HEALTH
Underserviced delivery due to a lack or
maldistribution of resources, both in
terms of money and labour.
Lack of specialty services.
Medical specialists often do not have enough
'critical mass' of patients to allow them to
economically serve a low population area.
The hardship on patients can be particularly
demanding in some illnesses, say cancer, in
which treatment requires regular long
distance travel.

SECTION 6
RURAL
COMMUNITY
DEVELOPMENT
Rural community development encompasses a
range of approaches and activities that
aim to improve the welfare and livelihoods
of people living in rural areas. As a branch
of community development, these approaches
pay attention to social issues particularly
community organizing.
This is in contrast to other forms of rural
development that focus on public works (e.g.
rural roads and electrification) and technology
(e.g. tools and techniques for improving
agricultural production).
Rural community development is important in
developing countries where a large part of
the population is engaged in farming.
Consequently, a range of community
development methods have been created
and used by organisations involved in
international development. Most of
these efforts to promote rural
community development are led by
'experts' from outside the community
such as government officials, staff
of Non-governmental organizations
and foreign advisers.
This has led to a long debate about
the issue of participation, in which
questions have been raised about the
sustainability of these efforts and
the extent to which rural people are
- or are not – being empowered to
make decisions for themselves.
