“Progressives work to make long-term change that lift up all parts
of society, not just some. They push the edge of what is politically
possible and fight for aspirational demands that fundamentally
transform society. Moderates uphold the status quo and make
short-sighted compromises that primarily benefit those already at
the top, leaving many behind to fight for the crumbs.”

WHAT DO
CONSERVATION, MODERATE
LIBERAL AND
PROGRESSIVES MEAN?

From a historical perspective we can define the terms conservative,
moderate, liberal, and progressive as:

Liberal: Can mean classical liberal (individual rights ideology rooted
in the late 1600 – 1700’s) or social liberal (an evolution of classical
liberalism that includes aspects of socialism, arising in response to
the age of Robber Barons as social justice and progressive values take
on new importance with voters). This term is sometimes used as meaning
“not a conservative.” In current usage, the U.S. classical liberals are
called libertarians, and social liberals are called “liberals.”

Progressive (or Radical): Always means wanting to push forward. For example,
one can be radically social-liberal (a progressive populist in a true sense),
radically classical-liberal (like a staunch libertarian), radically nativist
(radically “right wing,” favoring a native population over non-natives), or
radically anything. One can even be radically puritanical, with prohibition
and temperance being progressive populist movements of sorts, or radically
imperialistic. Progressivism typically implies altruism, but not all good
intentions have positive outcomes. Likewise, radical typically implies
“going too far,” but not all radical movements have negative outcomes.

Conservative: Either opposes liberalism or progressivism, its meaning changes
with the times. As liberalism, socialism, and progressivism changed, what
conservatism meant changed in response. The Conservative Federalists of the
late 1700’s wanted order; a conservative nativist populist Democrat of the
60’s, like George Wallace, wanted to return to the old southern classical
liberal way and a time when segregation was king. Later, after changes in the
parties, modern Republicans often run on a radically conservative platform.
They may, for example, favor state enforced religious laws. Meanwhile,
progressive movements like Prohibition have conservative aspects to them.

Moderate: Taking a balanced view on any issue, not being fully “liberal,”
“progressive,” or “conservative” as compared to the opposition. People often
hold mixed moderate views on most issues. Moderate views aren’t always
appreciated, for instance, leading up to the Civil War in the 1860’s and up
to Civil Rights in the 1960’s moderates ignored mounting issues related to
race resulting in drastic measures and political realignments.

THE 3 BIG
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN
CONSERVATION AND
PROGRESSIVES

What’s the difference between a conservative and a progressive?

Here are three examples.

No. 1: Conservatives and progressives have different views about
individuals and communities.

Conservatives ask:

“What can I do for myself, my family, my community,
and my fellow citizens?”

Progressives ask:

“What is unfair?”

“What am I owed?”

“What has offended me today?”

“What must my country do for me?”

The traditional American ethic of achievement gives way to the progressive
ethic of aggrievement.

As opposed to a variety of individuals making up one American community,
progressives seek to place individuals in a variety of competing communities.

The first creates unity.

The second, identity politics.

No 2.: Conservatives and progressives have different views about diversity and choice.

For progressives, different ethnicities and gender identities are welcomed but a
variety of opinions and ideas are not.

Just look at two areas of public life dominated by the left. On college campuses free
speech is under attack. If you’re a conservative working at a social media company or
using one of their platforms to share your views, you may find your job eliminated or
your account deleted.

And when it comes to choice, progressives love the word, but they don’t want it to
apply to our decisions on education, health care, and even how and where we live out
our religious faith.

Conservatives take a different approach.

Parents, not the zip code they live in, should choose the school that is best
for their child.

We all need health care, but we don’t all need the same kind or same amount.
And while people should be free to live as they choose, no one should be
forced to endorse or celebrate those choices if it violates their religious
beliefs.

Conservatives say people should have choices. Progressives say one political
solution fits all.

No. 3: Conservatives and progressives have a different view of “We the People.”

Whether it’s the Second Amendment, immigration, or putting limits on abortion,
if we the people don’t pass laws progressives approve, they turn to judges,
executive orders, and government bureaucrats behind closed doors to overturn
the will of voters.

Whatever one may think about the wisdom of hiking the minimum wage, banning
plastic straws, or removing controversial historical monuments, conservatives
believe voters closest to the issues should be the ones making such decisions
for their communities—not lawmakers in Washington or a panel of judges fives
states away.

To sum it up, conservatives believe in individual rights, not special rights.
Conservatives believe in allowing Texas to be Texas and Vermont to be Vermont.
And conservatives believe we the people can vote with our feet about where we
want to live and what laws we want to live under.

DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN
PROGRESSIVE
AND
LIBERAL

Progressive vs Liberal

Whether or not you are a member of a political party, it has become
common for people to label themselves as progressives, conservatives,
populists, or liberals depending upon what suits their image. These
are like brands in political ideologies, and it makes a person more
comfortable to be known as having leanings towards a particular
ideology rather than having no backbone at all. There is a lot of
confusion in the minds of people regarding the meanings of liberal
and progressive because of similarities between the two terms. While
the term progressive stands for reforms and improvements rather than
remaining stuck or stagnant, liberal is not much different. However,
there are subtle differences that will be highlighted in this article.

Progressive

Progressive is an ideology that stands for changes on all fronts whether
it is social, political or economic and is just opposite to conservatism
that opposes reforms and changes. Progressive ideology came to limelight
because of the changes in the society and political arenas resulting from
industrialization and also because people got fed up with the reactionary
and conservative attitudes. This label suits those who think of themselves
as working for social justice and empowerment of the poor and weaker
sections of the society. A progressive is one who is always feeling he can
provide better conditions and policies for the people.

A progressive ideology is in favor of more equitable distribution of the
assets for all and better opportunities for work and education for people
of all classes without providing any special benefits or privileges to a
class of people, business, or organization. Thus, progressives can be seen
trying to get maximum for maximum categories of people. Often their feelings
are reflected in programs like Social Security, Minimum Wages, and Medicare.
Devolution of power to the grassroots levels is something that progressives
always work for.

Liberal

Liberal is a political ideology and liberal is a person who believes in the
ideals of liberty and equality. Liberalism is what a liberal stands for, and
this translates into human rights for all, free and fair elections, and allow
the right to religion to the followers of all faiths. Liberal attitude is a
result of resentment and anger towards monarchy, divinity of kings and princes,
and social norms that brought misery and treated people as unequal.

Renaissance and protestant reform movements across Europe led to the development
of liberal attitudes and thinking. John Locke is considered the father of
Liberalism and his Two Treatises led to an awakening that eroded the divine rights
of Kings and monarchs and established governments that derived power from the
people and worked for the people.

Progressive vs Liberal

From the description of the liberals and progressives given above, one might be
tempted to equate them as they both appear to be so close in their thinking.
Despite their similarities, very few of the liberals would like to be branded as
progressives. In a recent poll, it was found that 2/3rd of people thought of
progressive as a positive ideology while the word liberal brought positive
comments from only 50% of the population. This was surprising given that 62% of
the population thought of conservatism as more positive. In fact, the image of
liberals has taken a beating because of scathing attacks by the Republicans lately.
So much so that liberals like Hilary Clinton are being forced to talk of themselves
as progressives. To understand the basic difference in the thinking of liberals and
progressives, one can see how differently they react to abuse of the Palestinians
by the Israelites. Progressives do not have any fear while criticizing Israel’s
actions while liberals can be seen supporting Israel as they are afraid of being
labeled anti-Semitic.
