PHARMACOPOEIA

Pharmacopoeia, art of the drug compounder,
in its modern technical sense, is a book
containing directions, the identification
of samples and the preparation of compound
medicines, and published by the authority
of a government, medical or pharmaceutical
society.

The name has also been applied to similar
compendiums issued by private individuals.

SECTION 2

THE
INTERNATIONAL
PHARMACOPOEIA
PHINT

The aim of The International Pharmacopoeia (PhInt),
which is issued by the World Health Organization
as a recommendation, is to achieve a wide global
uniformity of quality specifications for selected
pharmaceutical products, excipients, and dosage
forms.

The information published in The International
Pharmacopoeia is collated via a consultative
procedure and is based on international experience,
the monographs being established in an independent
manner.

Priority is given to medicines that are widely used
throughout the world. High priority is accorded to
medicines that are important to WHO health programs,
and which may not appear in any other pharmacopoeias,
e.g. new antimalarial drugs.

SECTION 3

PHARMACOLOGY

Pharmacology is the study of how substances
interact with living organisms to produce a
change in function.

PHARMACEUTICALS

If substances have medicinal properties,
they are considered pharmaceuticals.

The field encompasses drug:
composition,
properties,
interactions,
toxicology,
therapy,
medical applications,
antipathogenic capabilities.

Development of medication is a vital
concern to medicine, but also has
strong economical and political
implications.

To protect the consumer and prevent abuse,
many governments regulate the manufacture,
sale, and administration of medication.

SECTION 4

DRUG

A drug is any chemical,
biological substance,
synthetic or non-synthetic,

that when taken into the organism's body,
will in some way alter the functions of that
organism.

This broad definition can be taken to include
such substances as food. However more strict
applications of the word prevail in everyday
life.

In these cases the word "drug" is usually used
to refer specifically to medicine, vitamins,
entheogenic sacraments, consciousness expanding
or recreational drugs.

SECTION 5

SOURCES
OF
DRUGS

Drugs are obtained from many sources.
Many inorganic materials, such as metals,
are chemotherapeutic; hormones, alkaloids,
vaccines, and antibiotics come from living
organisms; and other drugs are synthetic or
semisynthetic.

Synthetics are often more effective and less
toxic than the naturally obtained substances
and are easier to prepare in standardized
units.

DRUG:

1. A substance used in the diagnosis, treatment,
or prevention of a disease or as a component of
a medication.

2. Such a substance as recognized or defined by
the U.S. Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

3. A chemical substance, such as a narcotic or
hallucinogen, that affects the central nervous
system, causing changes in behavior and often
addiction.

The term ‘drug’ has become something of a misnomer.
Strictly, a drug is a chemical substance used to
treat disease in animals, including man.

Today, a drug is a pure chemical substance whose
structure is known and is formulated, by mixing
it with other materials, into a preparation
suitable for administration.

This results in
the familiar:

tablets,
pills,
injections,
liquid mixtures,
emulsions,
syrups,
ointments,
creams,
salves,
infusions,
tinctures,

drops for:
eyes,
ears,
noses;

sprays for:
inhalation,

gases delivered by machine,
supositories, and the like.
