PERSONAL
LUBRICANTS

Personal lubricants (colloquially termed lube) are specialized lubricants
used during human sexual acts such as intercourse and masturbation to
reduce friction to or between the penis and vagina, anus or other body
parts or applied to sex toys to reduce friction or to ease penetration.

Surgical or medical lubricants or gels, which are similar to personal
lubricants but not usually referred to or labelled as "personal"
lubricants, may be used for medical purposes such as speculum insertion
or introduction of a catheter.

The primary difference between personal and surgical lubricants is that
surgical lubricants are thicker, sterile gels, typically containing a
bacteriostatic agent.

SECTION 2

EVERYTHING
YOU NEED TO KNOW
ABOUT LUBRICANTS

If you're wondering whether you might need a lubricant, the answer is probably
yes. Women can experience vaginal dryness for varying reasons—from breastfeeding
to menopause, or just on dryer days during our natural menstrual cycle, says
Debby Herbenick, PhD, author of Because It Feels Good: A Woman's Guide to Sexual
Pleasure and Satisfaction. In short, lubricants can help reduce pain and increase
pleasure. "We found in our research that lubricants were associated with more
pleasurable and satisfying masturbation and intercourse as compared to sex without
lubricant," says Dr. Herbenick.

A good lubricant may also save you time and frustration, says Ava Cadell, a sex
educator and founder of Loveology University in Los Angeles. "With age—and as
frequency of sexual intercourse decreases—the stimulation time required for the
body to produce vaginal lubrication may increase." Lubricants, she says, can help
your body feel ready for sex when your mind does—with no lag time in between.

Keep reading to find out which lubes are dos, which are don'ts and which are
absolute must-tries.

1. Warming Lubricants

You've probably seen magazine or TV ads for lubricant products that promise to add
a warming sensation during sex. But do they work? Better question: Do they feel
good? Yes, says Dr. Herbenick. "Warming lubricants can help to addsensation during
sex, particularly when used on the outside of a condom," she adds. But use sparingly.
"Be careful not to slather too much on," she says. "A dime-size amount is plenty for
many women. Because women's genitals are more sensitive than men's, the warming
sensation can be a bit much for women with sensitive skin."

2. Water-Based Lubricants

Most lubricants on the market today are water-based, which is a good thing. Many sexual
health experts say these can be best for people with sensitive skin. "Water-based
lubricants are the gold standard when it comes to lubricants," says Dr. Herbenick. But
be sure to look at the label carefully before you buy one. Just because it's "water-based"
doesn't mean it's irritation-free. "If you are sensitive to certain ingredients, you may
want to steer clear of products that contain propylene glycol or chlorhexidine, which can
cause irritation in some women."

3. Oil-Based Lubricants

Oil-based lubricants can provide good lubrication with a less "slick" feel, say experts.
"Some doctors even recommend olive oil as an option," says Dr. Herbenick. "But be careful
about these oil-based products. They can cause latex condoms to tear. However, they are
safe to use with polyurethane condoms." And most experts conclude that oil-based lubricants
are typically best for male use and not ideal for the vagina.

4. Flavored Lubricants

Flavored lubricants may help you get past shyness about oral sex with your husband, says
Cadell, who recommends Wet's Kiwi Strawberry variety. "They can be a fun way to introduce
oral sex to a partner who might be a little hesitant," she says. "For the best possible
experience, make sure it's a great-tasting, sugar-free formula." (Important note for women
and men with diabetes: Many flavored lubricants can contain sugar.) "I recommend
taste-testing flavored lubricant before using it during sex, as some taste terrible," adds
Dr. Herbenick. "My favorites include the Great Head brand from Pure Romance and Climax Fruit
Bomb in blue raspberry."

5. Silicon-Based Lubricants

The best place to use a silicon-based lubricant? In the shower, says Cadell. "Silicone is
ultra-moisturizing and doesn't break down in water, so it is extremely long-lasting. It's
also great for massage."But this lubricant comes with a hazard warning: "If it spills on
the floor, it can be very slippery," says Dr. Herbenick.

6. All-Natural Lubricants

"Organic," "all natural," even "eco-friendly" and "green." You may have seen this type of
abeling on lubricants at the drugstore. But do you need your lubricant to be truly "natural"?
Maybe, says Dr. Herbenick. The more natural the product, and the fewer additives it contains,
the less likely you'll have a reaction to it. "My absolute favorite lubricant is Good Clean
Love, which uses organic ingredients and has a great consistency," says Dr. Herbenick.

7. Homemade Lubricants

You may have heard rumors about people using egg whites, even peanut oil. But is this a good
idea, and is it safe? "You have to be careful not to irritate your genitals by putting
something on there that can cause irritation," says Dr. Herbenick. "Also, it would be unclear
if these things could cause latex condoms to break. Peanut oil would, of course, but we don't
know if egg whites would, as they haven't been tested, so that would be a concern." Also, when
you're introducing food products to the genitals, there can be a slight—but real—chance of
infection if you're not careful about hygiene afterward.

8. His and Hers Lubricants

You've probably seen the commercials for two types of lubricants packaged together: one for him
and one for her. Manufacturers of KY's Yours and Mine lubricants say "one is invigorating for
him, the other thrilling for her and together they add up to a totally new experience." But really,
is this a gimmick or a good idea? "This is more about marketing than need, but it's certainly a
novel way of letting women and men know that lubricants can be enjoyed by both partners," says
Dr. Herbenick. Bottom line: These types of products might not do anything more for your sex life
than a standard lubricant product will, but they may just add a little excitement and anticipation,
she says—and there's nothing wrong with that!

NATURAL
LUBRICANTS

Choosing the Right Lubricant

The choice is great with dozens available. So, how do you choose the right
one for you? There are many things to consider when choosing. Lubricants
ingredients can include hormones, anesthetics or be petroleum based
(not intended for use with latex products).

For many the best choice is water or silicone-based lubricant plus those
containing niacin and L-arginine as they tend to stimulate though increasing
blood flow.

Water-based lubricants:

Water-based lubes are general-purpose and most commonly used. They are the
best choice to use with sex toys and latex products like male and female
condoms. Being water-bases makes them easy to clean and are less likely to
cause irritation. They do tend to dry more quickly than others but a little
water added and they are good to go.

Silicone-based lubricants:

Silicone lubricants are more durable than and last longer than water-based.
These are not to be used with any adult sex toys made from silicone because
they can react together. They work just fine with latex products like male
and female condoms and non-silicone adult sex toys. Many women have reaction
to silicone so it’s best to check this first. Lastly, although they are
longer lasting silicone-based lubricants can be more difficult to clean from
bedding, clothing and any other items in contact.

Oil-based lubricants:

You’re probably familiar with Vaseline and vitamin E oil. These are common
oil-based lubricants not recommended to be used with any latex products like
male and female condoms or adult sex toys made of rubber. Oil-based lubes
break down products made of latex. This type of lube is best for couples in
trusted relationships that don’t need to use condoms and other latex products.
Lastly, oil-based lube is the most difficult to clean afterwards.

Lubricants are a vital part of a healthy sex life. Find a wide selection of
lubes including silicone, water-based, natural, vaginal, anal, flavored, and
more. Lubricants can be used during intercourse, foreplay, desensitizing, and
some are formulated to increase the likelihood of pregnancy.

HOW TO
MAKE A
WATER-BASED LUBRICANT

Water-based lubricant glides on with ease and doesn't leave a sticky residue.
It's useful for intimate situations when you can't form your own moisture.
Making your own water-based lubricant at home is easy to accomplish with a
limited amount of time and materials. This gives you more time to enjoy
yourself while spending less than you would on expensive commercial lubricants.

Items you will need

4 oz. aloe vera gel

1 tbsp. coconut oil

1 tsp. silk protein extract

1 tbsp. polysorbate 20

8 oz. bottle

1. Add the aloe vera gel to the plastic bottle.

2. Add the coconut oil and polysorbate 20 to the
bottle. Polysorbate 20 emulsifies oil and water.

3. Add the silk protein extract. This creates a
silky glide that resists drying.

4. Secure the bottle and shake it vigorously. The
materials will blend to create a thin, water-feeling
gel. The gel doesn't dry easily and allows for slick
lubrication.

WATER-BASED
LUBE WITH
ESSENTIAL OILS

Ingredients

1 cup COLD water

4 teaspoons arrowroot flour or powder
(or starch, all of these names are interchangeable)

5 drops peppermint essential oil

5 drops Sensation essential oil

3 drops black pepper essential oil

You’ll also need a small cooking pot, a whisk, a
container to store the lube in and a small funnel.

Method

In a small cooking pot, add the COLD water and arrowroot
flour. The water must be cold or the arrowroot will clump
up. Mix until combined.

Slowly bring to a boil on MEDIUM-LOW heat, stirring often.

Once it boils, the liquid will look kind of like gelatin
or glue. Remove it from the stove.

Pour into your container. I use THESE TUBES. Let cool slightly
and add the essential oils directly to the tubes. You’ll need
2 tubes for a full recipe, or 1 for a half recipe. Add more
or less essential oils once you’ve ahem, quality tested, this
amount.

Store it at room temperature. Putting it in the refrigerator or
freezer will allow a skin to form on the lube.

Enjoy!

HOW DO I
USE CONDOMS
AND LUBRICANTS?

Use only water-soluble lubricants, such as K-Y or Astroglide. Never use
an oil-based product with latex. Vaseline, baby oil, or baby lotion will
damage the rubber and destroy its protection.

Using spermicide for lubrication is also not recommended. The female condom
can be useful if your male partner(s) can't or won't use other condoms.
