SECTION 1

NON-GOVERNMENTAL
ORGANIZATION
NGO

NGO is a legally constituted organization
created by natural or legal persons that
operates independently from any government.

The term originated from the United Nations (UN),
and is normally used to refer to organisations
that do not form part of the government and are
not conventional for-profit business. In the cases
in which NGOs are funded totally or partially by
governments, the NGO maintains its non-governmental
status by excluding government representatives from
membership in the organization.

The term is usually applied only to organizations that
pursue some wider social aim that has political aspects,
but that are not overtly political organizations such as
political parties. Unlike the term "intergovernmental
organization", the term "non-governmental organization"
has no generally agreed legal definition.

In many jurisdictions, these types of organization are
called "civil society organizations" or referred to by
other names.

NGO, non-profit organization (NPO) and private voluntary
organization (PVO) are the most used terms and are used
interchangeably despite differing definitions.

Classifying none-governmental organizations within defined
boundaries excludes NGOs that fall outside each specific
boundary. Additionally, it is beneficial for NGO networks
to create a classification that allows similar organizations
to exchange information more easily.

To attempt a classification of NGOs requires a framework,
that includes the orientation and the organization's level
of operation.

An NGO's orientation refers to the type of activities
an organization takes on.

These activities might include:

environmental,

development,

advocacy work.

An NGO's level of operation indicates the scale at which
an organization works on, like the difference in work
between an international NGO and community or national
NGO.

LEGAL
STATUS

The legal form of NGOs is diverse and depends
upon homegrown variations in each country's
laws and practices. However, four main family
groups of NGOs can be found worldwide:

Unincorporated and voluntary association

Trusts, charities and foundations

Companies not just for profit

Entities formed or registered under special NGO
or nonprofit laws

NGOs are not subjects of international law, as
states are. An exception is the International
Committee of the Red Cross, which is subject to
certain specific matters, mainly relating to
the Geneva Convention.

SECTION 6

WHAT IS A
NON-GOVERNMENTAL
ORGANIZATION?

A non-governmental organization (NGO) is a type of non-profit
organization that works to promote human good while operating
separately from any national government. The definition of an
NGO varies slightly from nation to nation, but most NGOs fall
within this framework. Because of the somewhat nebulous
definition, the total number of NGOs worldwide is unknown,
with a wide range of estimates available.

Some NGOs work with governments and the United Nations to
accomplish their ends, with certain NGOs being granted
consultancy status by the United Nations. Consultancy status
allows an NGO to use the knowledge and supplies of the United
Nations to work effectively in its area of expertise. It also
permits the United Nations to allow an NGO to take over
humanitarian efforts if the NGO is deemed competent to handle
them.

NGOs also usually have three areas they might influence.
Community NGOs work within a small regional area, while
national NGOs work on a national basis. International NGOs,
of which there were an estimated 40,000 in 2006, work
globally to effect policy change and improve situations on
the ground. Some NGOs integrate operations and advocacy in
their work.

SECTION 7

WHAT IS
THE ROLE
OF
NGOS?

Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) are usually not-for-profit
establishments that are set up with the aim of fulfilling an
identified need in the society. The role of NGOs in the society
is quite broad and encompasses a multitude of matters that are
primarily targeted toward the general welfare of the society.
Since most NGOs choose a particular field or section of society
and devote their entire resources toward fulfilling that
particular need, and since the number of NGOs are quite staggering,
the role of NGOs is quite vast. As ubiquitous as NGOs appear to be,
and consequently their influence, they are often more concerned with
the humanitarian aspects of societal needs.

A lot of NGOs are primarily targeted toward the provision of education
for the members of the society who might not have the opportunity
without their assistance. Most NGOs simply choose an aspect of providing
education rather than tackling the whole issue from top to bottom. For
instance, some of them might decide to donate educational materials, such
as writing materials and textbooks to people who do not have access to
these items, while others might decide to provide school uniforms and
school furniture, such as desks and chairs, to prospective students. Still,
others might decide to build or rehabilitate school structures where
students can stay and learn in an environment that is more conducive than
what they had previously. Other NGOs might provide the physical input in
terms of providing teachers to help educate students.

Another role of NGOs is in the area of health. Perhaps this is one area
in which NGOs play a very vital role in the world at large. This can be
attributed to the role of NGOs in the prevention of diseases and the
eradication of the same in areas of the world where such diseases routinely
claim lives unnecessarily. The role of NGOs can also be seen in the manner
in which they respond through the prevention of medical personal and medical
supplies in areas where the people do not have access to such facilities and
also in areas where there have been some form of natural disasters.

NGOs help in social development through their involvement in the arts and
entertainment. They also play an important part in the provision of food to
people in areas with famine or devastation that may be the result of war or
natural disasters. Apart from the foregoing, NGOs also provide items like
clothing materials and toys to people who may not have easy access to such
materials.

INTERNATIONAL
NONGOVERNMENTAL
ORGANIZATION

The World Bank defines a non-governmental organization (NGO) as
"private organizations that pursue activities to relieve suffering,
promote the interests of the poor, protect the environment, provide
basic social services, or undertake community development".

An international non-governmental organization (INGO) has the same
mission as a non-governmental organization (NGO), but it is
international in scope and has outposts around the world to deal
with specific issues in many countries.
