SECTION 1
MOSS
Mosses are a botanical division (phylum) of small, soft plants that
are typically 1–10 cm (0.4–4 in) tall, though some species are much
larger, like Dawsonia, the tallest moss in the world which can grow
to 50 cm in height. They commonly grow close together in clumps or
mats in damp or shady locations. They do not have flowers or seeds,
and their simple leaves cover the thin wiry stems. At certain times
mosses produce spore capsules which may appear as beak-like capsules
borne aloft on thin stalks.
There are approximately 12,000 species of moss classified in the
Bryophyta. The division Bryophyta formerly included not only mosses,
but also liverworts and hornworts.
These other two groups of bryophytes are now placed in their own divisions.

BRYOPHYTE
Bryophyte, traditional name for any nonvascular seedless plant—namely, any
of the mosses (division Bryophyta), hornworts (division Anthocerotophyta),
and liverworts (division Marchantiophyta). Most bryophytes lack complex
tissue organization, yet they show considerable diversity in form and
ecology. They are widely distributed throughout the world and are relatively
small compared with most seed-bearing plants.

SPANISH MOSS
Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) is a flowering plant that grows
upon larger trees, commonly the Southern Live Oak (Quercus virginiana)
or Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) in the southeastern United States.

SECTION 6
HOW TO
GROW MOSS
Mosses are plants that develop from spores rather than seeds. They
thrive naturally in most temperate areas around the world. Though
they develop in moist soil, mosses can grow on any hard surface,
and are often seen on tree bark, rocks and other solid areas. As
a result, mosses are ideal for adding a luscious green look to any
garden or to use as a ground cover substitute for grass.
Moss is a wonderfully diverse plant, with dozens of variations of
the traditional pillow-soft green roughage. There are two general
types of moss though: pleurocarpous and acrocarpous. Pleurocarpous
type moss grows low to the ground and spreads out horizontally very
quickly. Acrocarpous type moss grows primarily in clumps and grows
in height/thickness before spreading outwards.
Tips
Because moss gets its nutrients from the air rather than from soil,
it can be easily maintained and requires no food or fertilizer. It
is important that the moss is kept in a moist area. After planting
or transferring your moss, make sure the landscape is kept moist
either through light watering, or by installing an automatic mister.
A water feature added to the area will also help maintain higher
humidity levels.
When laying moss, try placing a piece of board or other hard object
on top of the moss and apply pressure. This will allow the moss to
bond with the underlying soil.

MOSS
SPECIES
Growing moss in your garden can provide a hardy and eye-catching
complement to your other plants and fixtures. Management and
growth techniques for incorporating moss into your garden varies
by species. Some may require specific soil content while other
species of moss depend on access to moisture. Researching a variety
of moss species can help you determine what's the best fit for your
particular garden project.

SECTION 8
TYPES OF
MOSS
Among Earth's oldest plants, mosses grow from desert climates, such as
California's Mojave Desert, to mountains with frigid winter temperatures,
including the Alaskan arctic. The upper green portion of moss is the
capsule, and moss varieties range in size from those with capsules smaller
than pinheads to those with fernlike capsules about 3 feet long. Mosses can
be identified by their growing habits and by the habitats where they grow.
Tips & Warnings
Moss thrives most abundantly when the pH level of the soil is between 5.0
and 6.0 (acidic rather than alkaline). If your pH level is too high, work
sulfur into the soil to lower the pH.
