Hand sanitizers are a type of antimicrobial agent that kill or permanently
inactivate at least 99.9 percent of microorganisms when used on the hands.
Microorganisms include viruses, fungi, and bacteria.

Most hand sanitizers use toxic chemicals—especially alcohol—as their active
ingredient, so they are therefore hazardous if ingested. Hand sanitizers are
often used in occupational settings where there is an environmental risk of
transmitting infection-causing pathogens, such as the healthcare setting.

Alcohol-based sanitizers are usually preferred to handwashing with soap in the
occupational healthcare setting. They are faster, more efficient, and easier
on the skin than repeated handwashing. However, some kinds of pathogens—such as
norovirus—are more effectively removed by soap than by hand sanitizers. There
is some evidence that the use of hand sanitizers in non-healthcare settings,
such as offices, may reduce episodes of illness and illness-related absenteeism.

Hand sanitizers are not suitable for all settings.

They are not recommended for use on hands that are soiled with visible amounts
of dirt or grease. These contaminants must be mechanically removed by soap.

Further, hand sanitizers may not be effective at removing certain types of
chemicals, such as pesticides.

MAKE YOUR OWN
HAND SANITIZER

Hand sanitizer has recently been in short supply, and with the threat of the
Coronavirus, it's important to protect ourselves from the spread of bacteria
and germs. While hand washing is the top recommendation of the CDC, using
hand sanitizer is the best backup when soap and running water aren't available.

This tutorial showing how to make your own hand sanitizer is just what you need.

Things You'll Need

•3/4 cup of isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol 60% or higher

•1/4 cup of aloe vera gel

•15-20 drops of peppermint essential oil

•lidded plastic or glass bottle

Step 1

The alcohol will help kill bacteria, and mixed with the aloe vera gel, forms a
moisturizing gel based sanitizer. The addition of the peppermint essential oil
gives the hand sanitizer extra germ fighting strength and a pleasant scent.

Step 2

Mix well with a which until the alcohol, gel and essential oil are mixed thoroughly

Step 3

Pour into lidded bottles and label. A pea size drop of this hand sanitizer should be
sufficient. Just add to the palm of your hand and rub hands together making sure to
coat your entire hands, including in between your fingers.
