There is no question that homelessness is a
problem in the United States, but the issue
is of particular concern to veterans of the
armed forces.
Military.com estimates the number of homeless
veterans on any given night at 200,000. Grants
are available to get veterans back on their
feet, into a warm bed and into the workforce.
Homeless Providers Grant
An immediate need of homeless veterans is a
safe, comfortable shelter. The U.S. Department
of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers the Homeless
Providers Grant.
This grant is given to support the building,
acquisition or construction/renovation of
buildings that can house homeless veterans.
The grant award covers up to 65 percent of
the project cost, but 35 percent of funds
must be matched.
The Homeless Providers Grant does not cover
operational costs or salaries of individuals
working in the homeless veteran facility.
Inquiries and applications may be sent to the
VA's Office of Mental Health and Services.
Per Diem Grant
Much of the money offered by the VA goes toward
housing for homeless veterans. However, this is
only one side of veterans' needs; there is also
a need for funding to cover the cost of operating
shelters and the wages of shelter employees.
The VA offers a Per Diem Grant, which is separate
from (but which may supplement) the Homeless
Providers Grant. This grant allows up to $34.40
per day per veteran housed or one-eighth the cost
of daily care in nonhousing facilities. ("Daily"
is defined as no more than 8 hours.) Contact
information for this grant is the same as for the
Homeless Providers Grant.
Jobs for Veterans
Although the VA offers the majority of homeless
veteran grants, funding is also available from
other agencies, such as the U.S. Department of
Labor. The Department of Labor supports the Jobs
for Veterans State Grants, which are designed to
get veterans the training and education needed
for them to reenter the workforce.
These grants are vital to securing income for a
homeless veteran. Monies awarded through this
program vary from year to year, because funding
is determined largely by congressional action.
The range of the awards is very broad---from
$75,000 to $300,000.

Many United States armed forces veterans choose
to pursue higher education after their service.
Sometimes this can come at a sharp cost.
Military service members receive relatively low
pay and little opportunity to build up a college
savings plan. Fortunately, several entities, such
as federal and state governments, offer education
grants to veterans.
Vocational Rehabilitation Program
In addition to helping veterans find new jobs,
the Vocational Rehabilitation Program can help
veterans train for those jobs. This help can be
financial, by paying tuition costs for required
classes; or item-specific, such as new laptops
or money to pay for school books.
A veteran must have at least a 20 percent or
greater service-connected disability and incur
an employment handicap based on that disability
and other factors.
