BOOK

A book is a set of written, printed, illustrated, or blank sheets,
made of ink, paper, parchment, or other materials, usually fastened
together to hinge at one side. A single sheet within a book is called
a leaf, and each side of a leaf is called a page. A set of text-filled
or illustrated pages produced in electronic format is known as an
electronic book, or e-book.

Books may also refer to works of literature, or a main division of such
a work. In library and information science, a book is called a monograph,
to distinguish it from serial periodicals such as magazines, journals or
newspapers. The body of all written works including books is literature.
In novels and sometimes other types of books (for example, biographies),
a book may be divided into several large sections, also called books
(Book 1, Book 2, Book 3, and so on). An avid reader of books is a
bibliophile or colloquially, bookworm.

A shop where books are bought and sold is a bookshop or bookstore. Books
can also be borrowed from libraries. Google has estimated that as of 2010,
approximately 130,000,000 unique titles had been published.

HOW TO
GET
FREE
BOOKS

If you're a voracious reader on a budget, there are many ways
to get your fix!

Steps

1. Check out online giving groups such as Freecycle. Some users
in your area might be giving books away and they'll be happy for
you to take them off their hands.

2. Find a swapping website. Some involve swapping your old books for
others' unwanted books, such as BookMooch.com. Some involve taking
part in a big and generous community such as BookCrossing.com.

3. Go dumpster/skip-diving after hours at charity shops and
thrift shops.

4. Spread the word among family and friends that you're looking for
a good read - someone will be happy to lend or give you a book they
enjoyed.

5. Read free eBooks at places like FullBooks and ReadPrint.com, or
use Google Books to get a few sample pages of the books to the full
book.

6. Go to the library. You can borrow books for various lengths of time.
This is useful, especially if you don't want to re-read the book.

7. If you are a follower of book blogs, they often host book giveaways
for newly released books and ARC's (Advanced Reader Copies). For many,
you'll have to follow the blog to enter the giveaways, but that's a
small price to pay! You'll kill two birds with one stone: follow an
awesome new blog and possibly win books in the process.

8. Sites like Goodreads and Library Thing have giveaways and a First
Reads program, respectively. Library Thing sends out free books on a
first-come, first- serve basis, in exchange for a review. Goodreads
has many different categories under their giveaways tab to enter and
choose from.

HOW TO
GET
GRANTS
FOR
BOOKS

Grants are gifts of money given by the government or by private
citizens and foundations to help an individual or organization
with a certain situation or need. Millions of dollars worth of
grants are given each year for many different reasons, from
repairing homes and starting businesses to attending college,
and even to obtain books.

The goal of this article is to inform libraries and other
organizations how to expand their book collection with grants.

Finding the Grants

The first thing a public or school library must do is find the
grants. There are several different places an individual might
check in order to find grants for books.

Instructions

1. Check out Foundations and Organizations.

One of the best ways to find grants for books is through foundations
and organizations. There are several different types of foundations
that support libraries with grants for books. The Laura Bush
Foundation for America's Libraries is one foundation that supports
libraries with grants of up to $6,000, allowing libraries to replace
older books and expand their collections. The Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation is another place to check for available grants.

2. Look into Government Grants.

There are some government and state level grants that help libraries
obtain books as well. One place to find out about government grants
for books is to visit www.Grants.gov. This website contains a listing
of available government grants that individuals can search through
using keywords. Individuals should check the details of each grant to
determine whether they are eligible for the grant or not. Applications
for these grants are available through this website as well, making it
a valuable resource for government grants for books.

3. Apply for the Grants.

After finding the applications, individuals will need to apply for the
grants. Some grants will require a grant proposal, which will help the
grant review committee determine who will receive the grants. Grant
proposals should be written in an easy to understand manner, conveying
the importance of the grant for the library and outlining the benefits
that will result. Many organizations ask professional editors or writers
to design their grant proposals because they realize how important these
gratns are. However, individuals can easily learn to write their own grant
proposals by visiting such sites like Un.org.

The applications should be read carefully before the individual fills it out,
so that each question can be perfectly understood and reflected on before
answering. It's also a good idea that the individual have someone read over
the application and grant proposal before sending it off, to ensure that
there are no errors and that it's easy to understand and read.

With the tips and information above, individuals and organizations can
successfully apply for and potentially obtain grants that will help them
expand and renew their library with books.

HOW TO
GET RID
OF OLD
BOOKS

You may be an avid reader, but the dusty pile of books in your
room is starting to be a nuisance. You don't have the heart to
throw your old books away, but you don't have much of a use for
them anymore. To get rid of your old books, you can either sell
them, donate them, or use a few other handy tricks.

Tips

•If donating your books to a 501(c)3 nonprofit (charity) agency,
ask for a receipt so you can get a tax deduction.

•If selling at a garage sale, be creative (and cheap!) with your
pricing. Starting with 50 cents each, or 5 for $2.00, encourages
people to take more books. Especially if you have lots of books,
remember the goal is to get rid of as many as possible, because
books are hard to store and heavy to tote to the resale shop.
Make the price hard to resist and you will have better sales.

•Check the condition of a book before you sell it. Worn, marked-up,
stained, or broken books are in low demand and, if you're selling
books to a store, will make the buyer look askance at your other
books.

•File cardboard boxes work well for hauling books. Local bookstores
are usually willing to give away empty boxes, but call first.

•Grab a bag and wander around your town/village with some of them,
and don't set prices; get people to offer so they think they're
getting a bargain!

Warnings

•Don't give a book away before researching its value.

•Some bookstores charge tax on items when you use your trade credit.

•College bookstores are notorious for only paying out small amounts
in their buyback programs.

•Garage sale books do not always sell well.
