SECTION 1

COMMUNITY

The word community is derived from the
Latin communitas (meaning the same),
which is in turn derived from communis,
which means "common, public, shared by
all or many".

Communis comes from a combination of the
Latin prefix com- (which means "together")
and the word munis (which has to do with
performing services).

In biological terms, a community is a
group of interacting organisms sharing
an environment.

In human communities,

intent,

belief,

resources,

preferences,

needs,

risks,

and a number of other conditions may be
present and common, affecting the identity
of the participants and their degree of
cohesiveness.

Traditionally in sociology, a "community"
has been defined as a group of interacting
people living in a common location.

The word is thus often used to mean an urban
community. However, the definition of the
word has evolved and been enlarged to mean
individuals who share characteristics,
regardless of their location or type of
interaction. In this sense, "community"
can mean a group of interest or an ethnic
group.

COMMUNITY
OUTREACH

Outreach is an effort by individuals in
an organization or group to connect its
ideas or practices to the efforts of other
organizations, groups, specific audiences
or the general public.

Unlike marketing, outreach does not
inherently revolve around a product
or strategies to increase market share.
Typically non-profits, civic groups,
and churches engage in outreach.

Outreach often takes on an educational
component (i.e., the dissemination of
ideas), but it is increasingly common
for organizations to conceive of their
outreach strategy as a two-way street
in which outreach is framed as engagement
rather than solely dissemination or
education.

Outreach strategies are
linked to the:

organization's mission,

define targets,

goals,

milestones.
