A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam
as its working fluid.

Using boiling water to produce mechanical motion goes back over 2000 years,
but early devices were not practical. The Spanish inventor Jerónimo de Ayanzy
Beaumont patented in 1606 the first steam engine. In 1698 Thomas Savery
patented a steam pump that used steam in direct contact with the water being
pumped. Savery's steam pump used condensing steam to create a vacuum and draw
water into a chamber, and then applied pressurized steam to further pump the
water. The first commercial true steam engine using a piston was developed by
Thomas Newcomen and was used in 1712 for pumping in a mine.

Steam engines are external combustion engines, where the working fluid is
separate from the combustion products. Non-combustion heat sources such as
solar power, nuclear power or geothermal energy may be used. The ideal
thermodynamic cycle used to analyze this process is called the Rankine cycle.
In the cycle, water is heated and transforms into steam within a boiler
operating at a high pressure. When expanded through pistons or turbines,
mechanical work is done. The reduced-pressure steam is then condensed and
pumped back into the boiler.

In thermodynamics, a heat engine is a system that converts heat or
thermal energy to mechanical energy, which can then be used to do
mechanical work. It does this by bringing a working substance from
a higher state temperature to a lower state temperature.

A heat "source" generates thermal energy that brings the working
substance to the high temperature state. The working substance
generates work in the "working body" of the engine while
transferring heat to the colder "sink" until it reaches a low
temperature state. During this process some of the thermal energy
is converted into work by exploiting the properties of the working
substance. The working substance can be any system with a non-zero
heat capacity, but it usually is a gas or liquid.

Advanced steam technology (sometimes known as Modern Steam) reflects
an approach to the technical development of the steam engine intended
for a wider variety of applications than has recently been the case.

Particular attention has been given to endemic problems that led to
the demise of steam power in small- to medium-scale commercial
applications: excessive pollution, maintenance costs, labour-intensive
operation, low power/weight ratio, and low overall thermal efficiency;
where steam power has generally now been superseded by the internal
combustion engine or by electrical power drawn from an electrical grid.

The only steam installations that are in widespread use are the highly
efficient thermal power plants used for generating electricity on a
large scale. In contrast, the proposed steam engines may be for
stationary, road, rail or marine use.

RANKINE
CYCLE




The Rankine cycle is a model that is used to predict the performance of
steam turbine systems. The Rankine cycle is an idealised thermodynamic
cycle of a heat engine that converts heat into mechanical work. The heat
is supplied externally to a closed loop, which usually uses water as the
working fluid. The Rankine cycle, in the form of steam engines, generates
about 90% of all electric power used throughout the world, including
virtually all biomass, coal, solar thermal and nuclear power plants. It
is named after William John Macquorn Rankine, a Scottish polymath and
Glasgow University professor.

Microturbines are small, fuel-burning turbines used in localized
or mobile power generation and mechanical drive applications.

A microturbine or micro turbine is a power generation system based
on the combination of a small, gas turbine and a directly driven
high-speed generator. In many cases, a gas turbine includes an
exhaust gas recuperator that improves the efficiency of the system.

Microturbines also include a combustor that can run on various fuels
such as natural gas, diesel, ethanol, and biogas. The level of harmful
emissions is very low. Microturbines are suitable for many applications
where electricity is needed, such as a stationary power generator where
the system is used for continuous power production.
