LEARN
ABOUT
MENTAL HEALTH

What is mental illness?

Mental illnesses are conditions that affect a person’s thinking,
feeling, mood or behavior, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar
disorder, or schizophrenia. Such conditions may be occasional or
long-lasting (chronic) and affect someone’s ability to relate to
others and function each day.

What is mental health?

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social
well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps
determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy
choices.

Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood
and adolescence through adulthood.

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, poor mental health
and mental illness are not the same things. A person can experience
poor mental health and not be diagnosed with a mental illness. Likewise,
a person diagnosed with a mental illness can experience periods of
physical, mental, and social well-being.

5 TYPES OF
MENTAL ILLNESS
AND
DISABILITY

Mental illness is a condition that affects a person’s thinking, feeling,
and behavior. The mainstream medical community recognizes more than 200
classified types of mental illness.

These conditions can alter your ability to relate to other people, work,
and attend school, and can prevent you from living a normal life. Different
types of mental illness offer different experiences, and symptoms may vary
from person-to-person, even when they share the same diagnosis.

There are five major categories of mental illnesses:

Anxiety disorders

Mood disorders

Schizophrenia and psychotic disorders

Dementia

Eating disorders

It’s important to remember that each condition
can vary greatly from person to person.

Stigma and mental illness

When you’re concerned about your mental health or that or that of a loved on,
you should talk to a qualified health care provider. Many people with mental
illness may feel stigmatized for their condition, but treatment for these
disorders has come a long way. Mental illness requires the same need for
treatment as many physical ailments.
