SECTION 1

LGBT
SEX EDUCATION

LGBT sex education refers to an educational program, most commonly
found in schools, that addresses the sex education needs of LGBT
individuals and covers topics related to homosexuality. It is
usually integrated into the general sex education courses (alongside
heterosexual topics). There is disagreement about whether LGBT sex
education should be included in sex education curricula. Advocates
of LGBT sex education say that the inclusion of LGBT issues into sex
education programs would reduce homophobic bullying, improve the
health of LGBT people, and decrease instances of problems common in
LGBT students such as depression and low self-esteem; opponents
argue that LGBT sex education programs would force a political point
of view on students, misuse tax money, and disrespect religious
values.

LGBTQ CULTURE

LGBT culture or LGBTQI culture is a culture shared by lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender, questioning and intersex people. It is
sometimes referred to as queer culture (indicating people who are
queer), while the term gay culture may be used to mean "LGBTQI
culture," or to refer specifically to homosexual male culture.

LGBT culture varies widely by geography and the identity of the
participants. Elements common to cultures of gay, lesbian, bisexual
transgender and intersex people include:

Works by famous gay, lesbian, bisexual transgender and intersex people,
including: Contemporary LGBT artists and political figures

Historical figures identified as LGBT, although identifying historical
figures with modern terms for sexual identity is controversial. However,
many LGBT people feel a kinship with these people and their work
(particularly that addressing same-sex attraction or gender identity);
dedicated to supporting homosexual politicians.

An understanding of LGBT social movements

An ironic appreciation of things stereotypically linked to LGBT people

Figures and identities present in the LGBT community; in European and
American LGBT culture, this might include the gay village, drag kings
and queens, Pride parades and the rainbow flag.

Not all LGBT people identify with LGBT culture; this may be due to
geographic distance, unawareness of the subculture's existence, fear
of social stigma or a preference for remaining unidentified with
sexuality- or gender-based subcultures or communities.

The Queercore and Gay Shame movements critique what they see as the
commercialization and self-imposed "ghettoization" of LGBTQI culture.

SECTION 3

WHAT IS
“GENDER IDENTITY”?

Gender identity

refers to how people see and identify themselves; for example, some
people identify as female; some people identify as male; some people
as a combination of genders; as a gender other than male or female;
or as no gender. For example, transgender girls identify as girls
but were classified as males when they were born. Transgender boys
identify as boys but were classified female when they were born.
Everyone has a gender identity.

Gender Expression

refers to how people express their gender identity. Everyone expresses
their gender identity in different ways: for example, in the way they
dress, the length of their hair, the way they act or speak and in their
choice of whether or not to wear make-up.

WHAT DOES “TRANSGENDER” AND
“GENDER NONCONFORMING” MEAN?

Transgender

is a general term used to describe people whose gender identity differs
from the sex they were assigned at birth.

Gender nonconforming

refers to people who do not follow other people’s ideas or stereotypes
about how they should look or act based on the female or male sex they
were assigned at birth.

Transgender” and “Gender nonconforming

are umbrella terms that often encompass other terms such as transsexual,
cross dresser, gender queer, femme queen, A.G., Two Spirit, and many more.
It is important to refer to people with the term they prefer.

Gender Questioning

People who are questioning their gender identity might be wondering whether
they identify as a boy, a girl or another gender. They might also be
experimenting with different genders.
