NGO
INFORMATION
MANAGEMENT

One of the biggest operational challenges faced by organizations
today is information management. No matter what your organization
does, you can’t operate without collecting, storing, sharing, and
archiving information.

There is a dizzying array of information technology available to
help you work more efficiently, but if you don’t know how to select
and use technology effectively, you can end up with tools that
create problems rather than resolving them. Also, the fact that you
can automate everything doesn’t necessarily mean that you should.
Tried and true information management tools like ledger books and
filing cabinets still have their place, even in today’s high-tech
world. In order to select the right tools, you need to understand
your needs, to research tools and solutions, to weigh costs and
benefits, to ensure that the end users are comfortable with your
choices, and to arrange for maintenance and support.

NGO
USE OF
INFORMATION
AND
COMMUNICATIONS
TECHNOLOGY

Knowing NGO communication capabilities
and how they collect and use information is
essential to understanding how they operate in
support of humanitarian assistance and disaster
relief (HA/DR) emergencies.

Communications are essential during emergencies.
NGOs must be able to relay and receive information
about constantly changing conditions, needs,
operational challenges, and warnings. During
emergency operations, information is not only
extremely valuable but highly perishable. Timeliness,
clarity, and effectiveness of communications
are critical when lives are at stake. As a result,
NGOs rely on technology to function and perform well.

SECTION 3

HOW AN
NGO
COULD
BENEFIT
FROM THE
INTERNET

NGOs come in a variety of sizes and flavours from 2-person outfits
tucked into a small mountain village, to a million or more strong,
with budgets and influence to match.

Their organisational structures range from none, to quasi-democratic
membership organisations to highly hierarchical ones. Clearly then,
if looked at from the point of view of a specific NGO, some of what
is written below will not apply.

The benefits could approximately be
classified under the following heads:

1.Cost

2. Information processing

3. Mailing

4. Training

5. Fund-raising

6. Organisation

7. Personal

8. Travel

INFORMATION
AND
COMMUNICATIONS
TECHNOLOGIES
FOR
DEVELOPMENT
(ICT4D)

Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D)
refers to the use of Information and Communication Technologies
(ICTs) in the fields of socioeconomic development, international
development and human rights. The theory behind this is that more
and better information and communication furthers the development
of a society.

Aside from its reliance on technology, ICT4D also requires an
understanding of community development, poverty, agriculture,
healthcare, and basic education. This makes ICT4D appropriate
technology and if it is shared openly open source appropriate
technology.

Richard Heeks suggests that the I in ICT4D is related with
“library and information sciences”, the C is associated with
“communication studies", the T is linked with “information
systems", and the D for “development studies”. It is aimed
at bridging the digital divide and aid economic development
by fostering equitable access to modern communications
technologies.

It is a powerful tool for economic and social development.
Other terms can also be used for "ICT4D" or "ICT4Dev"
("ICT for development") like ICTD ("ICT and development",
which is used in a broader sense and development informatics.
