HOW TO TEACH YOUR
CHILD TO READ

Teaching a child to read is a fulfilling and educational process,
both for the parent and child. Whether you home school your kids
or just want to give your child a head-start, you can begin
teaching your child to read at home. With the right tools and
tactics, your child will be reading in no time.

Tips

If your child has no patience to learn to read and would rather
watch TV, try turning on the closed-captions and encouraging them
to follow along.

Babies and Toddlers cannot learn how to sound out words. They
can recognize symbols and correlate them to familiar objects or
vocabulary, but words are complex symbols, and flashcards are not
likely to lead to true mastery (e.g. distinguishing cork from clock,
or agree from argue)

Most children are not developmentally ready to begin sounding out
words until about 5-7 years of age.

Many children begin to develop phonemic awareness at age four. You
could begin teaching the sounds of letters at about four years. Simple
reading instructions can be started about the same time.

Don't rush into it! Give your child time. Read to them at least every day.

HOW TO TEACH A CHILD
TO WRITE THEIR NAME

Teaching a child to write their name is the first step in literacy
for a young child. It should be an enjoyable experience for you and
the child.

Tips

If your child has a hard time writing with pencil and paper, let your
child use thick crayons or markers. Your child can also practice
writing using a dry erase board and markers or a chalkboard and chalk.

Don't overwhelm the child otherwise they won't want to do it as much.

Help your child build fine motor skills by lacing beads or cheerios,
squeezing play-doh, playing with legos, and closing snaps or buttons.

Ask the child what they're favorite treat is beforehand, that way they
will really get into writing their name.

Writing with finger paints and writing in sand, rice, or oatmeal is a
fun way to practice forming letters.

In a couple years, for example, when the child is in third grade, ask
them to write their name for you. Once they do, you will observe that
they're name is written clearly with no errors at all. Give them LOTS
of encouragement and let them pick a prize, because they deserve it!

Give lot of praise.

BEGINING WRITING SKILLS
IN PRESCHOOLERS

Itís easy to keep track of your preschoolerís growth in height and
weight. But how can you measure your childís development in other
areas? For instance, can you tell if he or she is learning and
mastering age-appropriate writing skills?

As your childís parent and first teacher, there is no one better
to observe and gather information about the progress she is making
during the preschool years.
