Hippie, usually spelled hippy
in the United Kingdom, refers
to a subgroup of the 1960s and
early 1970s counterculture that
began in the United States, and
becoming an established social
group by 1965 before declining
during the mid-1970s.

Hippies, along with the New Left
and the civil rights movement,
are considered the three dissenting
groups of the 1960s counterculture
movement.

COUNTER
CULTURE

COUNTER
CULTURE

Though it also developed in
the United Kingdom, the
counterculture of the 1960s
began in the United States
as a reaction against the
conservative social norms
of the 1950s, the political
conservatism (and social
repression) of the Cold War
period, and the US government's
extensive military intervention
in Vietnam.

SECTION 4

INTENTIONAL
COMMUNITY

An intentional community is a
planned residential community
designed to promote a much higher
degree of social interaction than
other communities.

The members of an intentional
community typically hold a
common social, political or
spiritual vision.

They also share
responsibilities
and resources.

Intentional communities
include:
cohousing,
residential land trusts,
ecovillages,
communes,
kibbutzim,
ashrams,
housing cooperatives.

Typically, new members of an
intentional community are
selected by the community's
existing membership, rather
than by real-estate agents
or land owners (if the land
is not owned by the community).

CHARACTERISTICS

CHARACTERISTICS
The purposes of intentional
communities vary. They may
include sharing resources,
creating family-oriented
neighborhoods and living
ecologically sustainable
lifestyles (ecovillages).

Some communities are secular,
others have a spiritual basis.

Commonly there is a focus
on egalitarian values.

Other themes are voluntary
simplicity, interpersonal
growth and self-reliance.

Some communities provide
services to disadvantaged
populations,
for example,

war refugees,

the homeless,

people with
developmental
disabilities.

Some communities operate
learning or health centers.

You can never have
TOO many good hearted
women in any group or
cause.

A hippie is ... someone who accepts everybody,
no matter how they dress, what they do for a
living, what type of music they listen to.
Think, Common, Peace, Today.

we shouldn't have time to discriminate against
race, religion, or sexual preference, we should
worry about saving our world together, but still
be able to kick back with a soda, smiling that
you tried to help someone, did some good, and are
healthy enough to do it again tomorrow!!
