SECTION 1

CHARCOAL

Charcoal is the blackish residue consisting
of impure carbon obtained by removing water
and other volatile constituents from animal
and vegetation substances.

Charcoal is usually produced by heating wood,
sugar, bone char, or others substances in the
absence of oxygen.

The modern process of carbonizing wood, either
in small pieces or as sawdust in cast iron
retorts, is extensively practiced where wood is
scarce, and also by reason of the recovery of
valuable byproducts (wood spirit, pyroligneous
acid, wood tar), which the process permits.

SECTION 2

CHARCOAL
TYPES

LUMP CHARCOAL:

Lump charcoal is made directly from hardwood
material and usually produces far less ash
than briquettes.

EXTRUDED CHARCOAL:

Extruded charcoal is made by extruding either
raw ground wood or carbonized wood into logs
without the use of a binder.

The heat and pressure of the extruding process
hold the charcoal together. If the extrusion is
made from raw wood material, the extruded logs
are then subsequently carbonized.

SECTION 3

PURIFICATION
FILTRATION

The porosity of activated charcoal accounts
for its ability to readily adsorb gases and
liquids; charcoal is often used to filter
water or adsorb odors.

Its pharmacological action depends on the
same property; it adsorbs the gases of the
stomach and intestines, and also liquids
and solids (hence its use in the treatment
of certain poisonings).

Charcoal filters are used in some types of
gas mask to remove poisonous gases from
inhaled air.

Wood charcoal also to some extent removes
coloring material from solutions, but animal
charcoal is generally more effective.

SECTION 4

HOWTO
MAKE
CHARCOAL

To make charcoal in a developing nation,
you bake wood at a moderate temperature
while it's buried under soil to deprive
it of oxygen.

This drives off the undesirable elements
but keeps the carbon in the wood from
burning.

Activated charcoal?
The stuff in aquarium filters
and drinking-water filters and
air filters?

If you let oxygen eat at charcoal a bit
before extinguishing the flame, it bores
countless tiny holes into the surface.

These holes are marvelous at trapping molecules
of filth from the water or air passing through.

Activated charcoal is just burned charcoal,
overcooked by amateur combusters who ignored
that white ash on their briquets.

It is used in certain metallurgical "purifying"
treatments and as a filter to remove organic
compounds such as chlorine, gasoline, pesticides,
and other toxic chemicals from water and air.

ACTIVATED
CHARCOAL

Activated charcoal:
(charcoal activated with CO2, water vapor,
or chemical compounds) made of coconut shell
has advantages compared to other materials
(wood, rice husk, corn cob) because of its
ability to absorb color or aroma.

Processing of
activated charcoal.

You could make activated carbon by placing
wood in a sealed container with only a very
tiny hole in it and heating it until the
wood is charred into activated carbon.

Ideally, a tube leading into the container
would be used to force water onto the wood to
create steam inside the container though this
is not essential.

(The main consideration is to not allow air to
get to the charcoal when it's being heated while
having a large enough hole in the heating
container to keep it from exploding when the hot
gases in it expand.)

SECTION 6

ACTIVATED
CARBON

Activated carbon is a black solid substance
resembling granular or powdered charcoal.

It is extremely porous with a large surface
area, and typically produced from organic
precursors such as bamboo, coconut shells,
palm-kernel shells, wood chips, sawdust,
corncob and seeds.

High-grade activated carbon can be obtained
from woody material like bamboo with inherent
mechanical strength, high carbon (40%) and
low ash content.

Bamboo based carbon can serve as a good
adsorbent and can be regenerated and
reused many times.

ACTIVATED
CARBON

Activated carbon, also called activated charcoal
or activated coal, is a general term which covers
carbon material mostly derived from charcoal.

For all three variations of the name, "activated"
is sometimes substituted with "active".

Bought at your local pharmacy, activated charcoal
is commonly used in emergency treatment for specific
kinds of poisonings and drug overdoses to keep the
poison from being absorbed from the stomach into the
body.

Charcoal is also used to cure gas/flatulence and help
an upset stomach. A natural deodorant and disinfectant,
Activated Charcoal is one of the finest absorptive and
adsorptive agents known.

Orally administered, these fine black granules have an
amazing ability to extract and neutralize many more times
their own weight in gases, heavy metals, toxins, poisons
and other chemicals.

SECTION 9

HOW
ACTIVATED
CHARCOAL
WORKS

Activated charcoal keeps the poison from
being absorbed from the stomach into the
body.

Charcoal is most successful if used within
the first hour of swallowing poison.
In severe poisoning cases, several doses of
charcoal might be required.

Ordinarily, activated charcoal should not be
used to treat the ingestion of corrosive poisons
(lye, acids, fuel oil, alcohols, et cetera).

In the event of accidental poisioning, please call
your doctor or area Poison Control Center before
using activated charcoal.

They will advise as to the use of charcoal after
taking info on the the type of poison, allergies,
and other medical problems.

SECTION 10

CHARCOAL
WARNING !!!

Charcoal can decrease your
body's absorption of certain
nutrients and also interfere
with medications!!!

Because of this, frequent use is not recommended.
Activated charcoal may also cause abdominal pain
or swelling.

If this occurs, contact your doctor immediately,
it could be an indication of intestinal bleeding
or blockage.

NOTE:

Charcoal loses its effectiveness
when mixed with chocolate syrup,
ice cream, or sherbet.

SECTION 11

BASIC
BLACK
SALVE
RECIPE

2 Tablespoons Bee's Wax
3 Tablespoons Cocoa Butter
3 Tablespoons Shea Butter

2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
1 Tablespoon Vitamin E
1 Tablespoon Honey Powder
2 Tablespoons Activated Charcoal Powder
3 Tablespoons Rhassoul Clay

Optional: Herbal Extracts, Essential Oils,
depending on what you're using the salve
for.

8 1/2 ounce clear jars

Black Salve is touted to do everything these days,
including curing cancer.

What it does best is absorb toxins. The common use
for it is to put a glob of it on a bee sting, slivers
or a cut. It sucks out the poisons!
No home should be without it.

First Step:

Put Bees wax, cocoa butter and shea butter in a small
pot and heat. You want to keep it at 180 degree for at
least 15 minutes.
This is easier than it sounds. Just heat it on medium
high until it is melted. Turn off the burner and let
it sit. It should still be over 180 in 15 minutes. :)

Second Step:

Add the rest of the ingredients and stir until well
blended. The easy place to buy Activated Charcoal is
in your local health food store or herbal medicine
store.
You'll probably have to open a lot of capsules, but
it is the stuff you need for this.

Third Step:

Feel free to add any relevant herbal extracts to the
formula just before you spoon it in. You want to make
sure it is very cooled off before adding any extracts,
essential oils, or fragrance.

Fourth Step:

Once it is smooth, spoon into 1/2 ounce jars. Give a
jar to everyone you know. They will thank you for it!
